The study of Islamic Law at the University of Leipzig has a long tradition which started with the founding of the Semitistic Institute in 1900 offering the first institutional framework for studies of Islamic law. Gotthelf Bergstraesser (d.1933), Edgar Proebster (d. 1942), and Paul Koschaker (d.1951), are three of the many famous scholars and professors who studied and worked here under the leadership of August Fischer (d. 1949).
